Tuesday, March 24, 2015: 9:45 AM-11:15 AM
Potomac 3 (Hyatt Regency Crystal City)
Summary: The workshop will comprise the following four sessions: 1) “Be the change you want to see in the world”: Preparing for 21st century public health paradigm changes. This session will review strategies and lessons learned for changing public health educational paradigms within your college, departments, and university. Strategies and methods for diffusing 21st century educational paradigms, increasing adoption within your college, and mobilizing your faculty will also be addressed; 2) Know, Do, Be: Translating 21st century public health content/skills into competencies. This session will begin with an overview of competency-based vs. competency-informed curricular designs followed with strategies for translating the recommended 21st century public health content and skills into multi-level competencies. Lessons learned will also be presented regarding best methods for translation of competencies according to chosen curricular design; 3) Create & Innovate: Developing an innovative core curriculum. The third session will focus on methods for translating competencies into innovative interdisciplinary core courses. Frameworks for creating interdisciplinary courses within a competency-based/informed structure and function will be presented. Lessons learned regarding fueling creativity within potentially stifling university systems will also be addressed. 4) Ready, Set, Evaluate: Piloting and revising your program of study: The last session will present experiences and lessons learned with regard to piloting the revised core courses. An example of design, methods, instruments, and analyses will be presented.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will: • Describe the challenges and strategies for 21st century public health educational paradigm changes; • Describe the difference between competency-based and competency-informed curriculum and implications for assessing outcomes; • Identify frameworks and methods for translating “Framing the Future” recommendations into a 21st century public health curriculum; • Discuss methods and strategies for evaluating process of change and revisions via a pilot evaluation.
