TS01 Academic Affairs Section Sponsored Session: Best Practices in Evaluating Teaching

Description: Continually upgrading one’s teaching abilities and that of fellow faculty is an important role played by Academic Affairs’ leaders at schools and programs.  This task intersects with the Council on Education for Public Health’s aims to ensure the quality of public health education and increase flexibility and opportunities for innovation.  Towards this end, the Academic Affairs’ Section is hosting a two-part session to explore both the accreditation criterion on faculty instructional effectiveness and an exemplar method of evaluating pedagogical practices.

First, Mollie Mulvanity (CEPH) will speak about the proposed criterion E3. Faculty Instructional Effectiveness, in particular, the nine proposed indicators of instructional quality and how CEPH plans to assess schools’ and programs’ fulfillment that “all faculty (full-time and part-time) are informed and current in their areas of instructional responsibility.”  The moderators will follow Ms. Mulvanity’s remarks by leading the attendees in a sharing their experiences in improving instruction and evaluating teaching (40 minutes).

Next, Jack Barnette (Louisville) will present on Weak, Good, and Better Ways to Evaluate Teaching from his experiences as an associate dean for academic affairs at several schools of public health.  The moderators will follow Dr. Barnette’s remarks by eliciting additional experiences from attendees in improving instruction and evaluating teaching (40 minutes).
